A Book

A coming-of-age story with a slight twist: Bernadette “Bernie” O’Brien is an underachieving, overweight 14-year-old, who also happens to be blind.  All she wants is an average share of happiness but instead, her life is like a runaway roller coaster that can only plummet, down.

Full of hope and promise at the start of the school year, Bernie soon encounters challenges that seem insurmountable: betrayals, deceits, and bullying not only from her peers but from her teachers, as well.  She yearns to be accepted and quickly discovers the social perils of in-crowds. She starts to succumb to self-doubt, eroding self-confidence, and low self-esteem.

With as much humor and grace that she can muster, she eventually discovers that she does have friends and companions who are genuine and who have her best interest in mind. And she realizes that they’ve been there all along the way.

Based on the award-winning book Roller Coaster Down by Mary Lash and Vasant Garcia, Blind Power is a coming-of-age file about Bernie, a blind teenage girl who is bullied. She wants to fit in, but both students and teachers try to crush her hopes and desires.

This powerful story – based on Vasant Garcia’s real life experiences – follows Bernie from her attempts to fit in to the ultimate moral dilemma and self-discovery.

Together we can prevent the bullying of disabled individuals. This file will be a catalyst for public and action. The film will be followed with a nationwide 25 city press tour, public policy campaign, and tools and resources for students, parents, educators and the community.

A bully thrives on the silence of others. Blind Power shouts out for justice. A movie and a movement to help end disability bullying.
